Meet Troy Brockbank

Find out what made Troy choose Beca - from diversity and inclusion, to worklife balance, and a sense of belonging.

Meet Ben Melvin, a water surfing, senior associate civil engineer in Taranaki, who's making waves in stormwater and freshwater management.

The best of both worlds

I’m privileged to work and live in New Plymouth, Taranaki, and be within reach of the projects Beca is involved in locally. It’s the best of both worlds – I'm able to work on and shape projects that have a real impact on my local community, while also getting involved in projects that we work on nationally and internationally.

These projects could be anything from reducing flooding at people’s doorstep, to developing modern infrastructure and public spaces, to providing employment and career opportunities to those in the engineering, planning and construction industries.

Diverse in nature and  technical experience

The diverse nature of the role means I also work with Beca teams across several geographic areas and disciplines including urban design, architecture, ecology, resource management planning, and archaeology, as well as the traditional engineering disciplines. Our clients, partner consultants and stakeholders are often part of our wider team delivering projects.

There is a huge amount of technical knowledge and experience within the stormwater team that gets shared. We try and keep things light-hearted and have fun working together, but we understand when it’s time to knuckle-down and focus on delivery. It’s a culture and environment where you feel you can belong, and where you can collaborate to develop integrated and collective design solutions.

The challenges ahead - creating opportunities

There are several key challenges that are shaping the direction of stormwater and freshwater management in New Zealand. These include the realisation that the frequency and severity of flooding is worsening because of climate change; the need to develop more resilient and sustainable communities to home our growing populations; and the recognition that protecting freshwater in-turn protects the health and cultural well-being of the wider environment.

These challenges have created opportunities for our stormwater team to work on catchment and master planning projects which require flood modelling, flood hazard assessments, environmental and cultural assessments.

We also work with a wide range of disciplines, stakeholders and tangata whenua on these projects, so every project is unique. Ultimately these plans will set the framework for flood management and freshwater restoration projects and influence where and how our communities will grow.

An awesome team

It's a really awesome team to be part of – and there are lots of opportunities currently available to you. If you are someone who wants the freedom to shape their career and influence some of New Zealand’s key infrastructure projects, then Beca is for you!
