Indo Pacific 2023 International Maritime Exposition, the Asia Pacific region's premier showcase of naval equipment and technology was hosted in Sydney last week, wrapping up a busy few days for our Defence and National Security team.
An incredible event, building on last year’s success following a three-year hiatus, Indo Pacific 2023 took place at ICC Sydney from 7-9 November 2023 and attracted a highly engaged crowd of senior defence industry, military and government decision-makers from 46 nations across the democratic world.
With a record-breaking 27,000 attendees over three days (up 8% from last year) who visited 832 exhibiting organisations, this expo was the largest Defence event held in Australia to date.
It was also an opportunity for professional service providers within the Defence industry to network with each other and prospective clients, building the partnerships that enable Australia's critical defence capabilities at a time of growing geostrategic challenges.
Beca’s growing presence
Throughout the expo, our Trans-Tasman Defence and National Security team held pride of place at the Investment NSW stand and were kept very busy showcasing our growing maritime capabilities and experience.
In the words of Mick Richardson – General Manager, Defence & National Security Australia, "It was three very full but exceptional days of us explaining to the maritime community exactly how we make everyday better for them, and client and peer engagement.
"It also provided an opportunity for me to gain an appreciation of the current market here in Australia, and short to mid-term guidance from Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, Chief of Navy and Richard Marles, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence on the direction of Maritime Acquisition Programs following the Defence Strategic Review".
Mick’s words were echoed by David Barter – Business Director, Defence & National Security Australia, who said, "It’s been a successful week for us on a range of fronts – elevated brand awareness, genuine client connectivity and future positioning on our targeted strategic pursuits. I had the opportunity to attend several of the executive functions and briefings during the week, with the key defence sponsors providing updates to the Industry on the various strategic reviews and influence on our planned pipeline".

Beca joins Navantia Technology Partner Network (TPN)
Day three witnessed the official announcement of Navantia Australia’s new Technology Partner Network (TPN) - a grouping of 14 companies, including Beca. With a shared goal of creating opportunities for Australian Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) by enhancing their capability to support naval programs, the TPN provides RAN with a coordinated sovereign defence maritime engineering and design capability.
CIWS Simulator – star of the stand
And finally, the highlight of our Beca stand was our CIWS (Close-In Weapons System) Simulator.
Developed in partnership with Bohemia Interactive for the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), CIWS is a fully immersive training tool, allowing weapons operators to simulate both surface and air threat scenarios in classrooms ashore, preventing the need for expensive and time-consuming sea-based training. Attracting countless people to our stand, it was also an opportunity to tell the story of how we worked with RNZN to assess their needs and bring this bespoke solution to life.
Thank you to everyone who attended Indo Pacific 2023 and the organisers for putting together an incredible event once again.
