Norske Skog Tasman (NST) paper mill in Kawerau is in a highly active geothermal area. Since the 1950s it’s been using geothermal steam for process heating and power generation. Now it produces renewable electricity too.
To help NST choose the right technology for the site, Wood Beca (formerly Beca AMEC) helped during the feasibility study phases. Through our help with preliminary engineering, capital cost estimates, resource consents and air dispersion modelling, NST was able to select the best power plant for their needs.
Bringing the power plant to life was achieved through our involvement in the detailed design phase. This included project engineering management, geotechnical, civil, structural and fire engineering design services, and more.
The project presented some unique challenges. From different time zones to language barriers. Through working as part of an integrated team with NST, these challenges were successfully overcome.
