Opening doors to more tourists

Melbourne Airport is undergoing its biggest ever expansion project, and we’re playing a part in its transformation.

It’s not just overseas tourists that love to visit Melbourne. The number of home-grown visitors is also on the increase. So Melbourne Airport embarked on the expansion of their southern precinct by building a brand-new Terminal 4 that caters for 10 million domestic passengers arriving and departing each year.

More passengers mean more aircraft flying, and that means extra parking and taxi-ways are needed. The Southern Apron Expansion involved the construction of 13 hectares (or the size of seven Melbourne cricket grounds) of new airfield pavement and services, 23 new Code C aircraft parking bays including the relocation of freight aircraft operations.

We were intimately involved from the start, developing design and meticulous staging for the construction so the airport could continue its freight operations without disruption.

It took two and a half years and over 500,000 hours to complete, and in all that work, not a single hour was lost through injury. Our delivery team clocked up over 61,000 hours to make it happen, and our collaboration with Melbourne Airport and Fulton Hogan in a tight-knit team paved the way for project success.

The next phase of Melbourne Airport’s transformation is underway, but in the meantime, Terminal 4 is open and ready for visitors.
