Expanding light rail to support Sydney’s river city

When complete, Parramatta Light Rail will link Carlingford with Westmead via Parramatta in the heart of Sydney’s fast-growing metropolitan region, offering residents and visitors a seamless, environmentally friendly new way to get from A to B.

One of the New South Wales government’s State Significant Infrastructure (SSI) projects, being delivered to serve the needs of a growing Sydney, the $2.4 billion Parramatta Light Rail will stretch 12km from the sprawling Westmead medical precinct, all the way to suburban Carlingford.

Working closely with Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), Beca are supplying our expertise in environmental planning and approval services and civil engineering (including traffic engineering) as part of a joint venture with CPB and Downer Contractors; to help make this vital piece of public infrastructure a reality.

The scope of our involvement includes coordinating planning approval requirements with relevant parties, addressing day-to-day administration of planning approval conditions, and ensuring documentation produced by the Design Joint Venture and Construction Joint Venture satisfies the NSW state government’s planning approval requirements.

Additionally, we are involved in delivering temporary traffic staging design, traffic modelling and signal design, road safety audits and design of all the bus infrastructure needed for the new bus routes that will also traverse the area.

Given our track record delivering urban design projects across the region, we’re also developing the Parramatta Light Rail Pedestrian, Cyclist Network and Facilities Strategy, which integrates a range of public amenity enhancements as part of an overall package.

Following its expected opening in 2023, the Parramatta Light Rail will make everyday better for over 28,000 users per day, with another 130,000 Sydneysiders living within a short walk of one of its stops.
